What did the choir actually sing as Queen Camilla entered the coronation?

The Coronation of King Charles III was a fairly serious and traditional affair.

That didn’t stop some finding a more amusing side of the Westminster Abbey occasion, though.

Some tuning in joked on social media that – as Queen Camilla walked through the Abbey at the start of the ceremony – a choir sang the words ‘wide-backed vagina, Camilla’.

Others shared their own takes on what the words in the audio were – all of which were, err, a misinterpretation. To say the least.

If you can’t quite tell: what were the choir really singing?

What did the choir sing as Queen Camilla entered the coronation?

As Queen Camilla walked through Westminster Abbey, the choir actually sang ‘Vivat Regina Camilla’.

A Latin phrase, this means ‘Long live Queen Camilla’.

‘Regina’ – which is pronounced with an ‘i’ sound rather than an ‘ee’ sound – is the Latin word for Queen.

After The Queen’s entrance, the choir then harmonised on a similar phrase for King Charles, who walked behind her.

They sang ‘Vivat Rex Carolus’, which means ‘Long live King Charles’ in Latin.

‘Rex’ is the Latin word for ‘King’, while ‘Carolus’ is the Latin version of Charles’ name.

These are known as the Vivats, which are Latin acclimations traditionally sung by the King’s Scholars of Westminster School, as the monarch arrives at the coronation, according to Westminster Abbey’s website.

It’s thought that Westminster School’s scholars have contributed to coronations in this way since 1560.
