During the Nashville leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour on Friday, those in attendance decided to honour the Grammy winner’s late grandma, Marjorie.
Marjorie – who Taylor, 33, named a song after on her album Evermore – was the star’s maternal gran and died in 2003.
At the start of the weekend, Taylor’s fans orchestrated a tribute to Marjorie and pulled out photos of her as the hitmaker performed her grandma’s namesake track.
However, while some thought the gesture was sweet, others found it inappropriate, with one social media user even branding it ‘abhorrent’.
According to Billboard, Taylor told the audience as they held up photos of her late relative: ‘What are you trying to do to me?’
The Love Story crooner also called the gesture ‘meaningful and so special’.

But online backlash was swift, with one person writing: ‘Everyone saying “Taylor clearly liked it” … y’all do realise that if Taylor had reacted negatively at all, she’d be crucified for it? Like this put her in a weird position being in front of tens of thousands of people watching her.’
Another person added: ‘Given that this Marjorie is a now deceased family member of Taylor Swift, this is actually one of the most abhorrent things I’ve ever seen a fan do. I don’t even care if she appreciated it, how does this go through your mind?’
Speaking from personal experience, someone else tweeted: ‘This would bother me a lot. If I open up and talk about my dad dying (for example), and then later go to a performance and they have cheap printout pics of my dad, I’d be upset. Would honestly make the rest of my performance/day kinda suck.’
Other comments included: ‘Oh this is extremely weird’ and ‘This would be my breaking point.’

The tribute was organised by TikToker @auntie_hero, who wrote on social media after the show: ‘I couldn’t be more proud of making this crazy idea into reality. Lugging 300 copies around a crowded stadium wasn’t ideal, but for her I’d do it, “a million little times”!’
