Neighbours in a street in Greater Manchester are celebrating this week after winning £1m to share between them in the People’s Postcode Lottery.

Nine residents in the Swinton postcode M27 9UY scooped the new Millionaire Street prize, in which one lucky postcode wins £1m to share.

Civil servant Chris Leonard, 64, who lives with his wife of 40 years, Elisa, 59, and their dogs Rosie and Poppy, had three tickets so won the largest sum in the street, £249,999.

Ecstatic Chris Leonard (pictured with wife Elisa) is going to treat himself to a red Mercedes CLA 220d

He said: ‘This is going to make a mind-blowing difference.  We got the biggest shock of our lives when we saw the amount.’

He plans to treat himself to a red Mercedes CLA 220d and a luxury holiday in Anglesey, north Wales, with Elisa and the dogs.

Widowed mother of three Lesley McNally scooped £166,666 with her two People’s Postcode Lottery tickets, bought by her husband Garry shortly before he died in 2021.

She was on her way to work when she saw the Postcode Lottery team in the area and asked if anyone locally had won.

Widowed mother of three Lesley McNally was bought her two winning tickets by her husband Garry shortly before he died in 2021

Lesley, 54, who wept when she discovered how much she had won, said: ‘I’m overwhelmed. I’m happy that I’m won, and the family have won, but it is tinged with sadness because Garry’s not here to see it.’

She said her husband, a builder and decorator, had been planning to renovate their bungalow when he died after a sudden heart attack five days after he turned 60.

Lesley, a car dealership administrator, said: ‘If he was here, he would have started building. After we moved in, he had the roof off in a day. Now I’ll just enjoy it and do what we wanted to do.’

Nursery nurse Dolores Santos, 66, also plans to renovate her house after winning £83,333.

The mother of one said: ‘I feel quite giddy. This will make such a massive difference to our lives. We moved into this house not quite two years ago – now we’ll be able to renovate it with a new kitchen, new roof, front garden, and get it rendered.’

Shocked £83K winners Angela Greenhalgh and husband John

Another neighbour, Angela Greenhalgh, 51, also picked up £83,333 before calling her boss and saying she was taking a ‘duvet day’.

Angela, who works as an administrator for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service, and her husband John plan to help their daughters Natasha, 27, a primary school teacher, and Madison, 23, an admin worker, with deposits for their first homes.

She said: We can help our daughters out and I might treat myself to a new car. I got private plates for my 50th but can’t put them on my current car because it’s too old!’

Lesley McNally, Dolores Santos, Chris Leonard and Angela Greenhalgh were among the eight winners sharing £1 million (L-R)

People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador Matt Johnson visited the winners to present them with their prizes.

He said: It was an amazing day in Swinton as we launched our mega £1m weekly prize.

‘I loved surprising the winners and hearing how they plan on treating themselves and their families.’
