Eurovision 2023 hopeful Mae Muller has opened up about her behind-the-scenes tricks for getting prepped for live performances – and it turns out Harry Styles plays a very important part.

This week, the song contest finally begins, with acts from across the globe bringing the party atmosphere to Liverpool as this year’s event honours last year’s winner, Ukraine, who secured their victory with Kalush Orchestra.

Following Sam Ryder’s incredible journey in the 2022 competition landing in second place, Mae is hoping to top the vote a year later with her track I Wrote A Song.

Ahead of the glorious spectacle kicking off, the 25-year-old shared how she’s feeling, and disclosed how she gets ready to go up on stage with the help of the Watermelon Sugar singer.

‘I feel like it’s such a huge honour to be able to represent my own country where I have lived all my life. The fact that we’re hosting this year just feels extra, extra special,’ said Mae, who grew up in London.

When asked if she has any rituals that she does before performing or any good luck charms, she added: ‘I always have to have a tea, any kind of herbal tea with a lot of honey in it, and I have it out of my Harry Styles mug which just gives me the good vibes, I know if Harry’s with me then I know it’s going be ok.’

While Harry, 29, might not be there in person to lend his support to Mae, at least his presence is being felt in spirit.

The first look at Mae’s performance during a dress rehearsal for Eurovision teased an extremely slick show, complete with dashing back-up dancers and an impressive set design.

The singer explained that she wanted to create an ‘empowering’ song that would ‘get everyone up off their seats’, while drawing on her personal experiences.

‘I think when we go through negative things like a breakup, or any kind of heartache, it’s really easy to focus on the negatives and get lost in that but I wanted to focus on the empowerment of that and how we can navigate those emotions to come out the other side, feeling confident,’ she outlined.

The Eurovision Song Contest will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
