Your weekly Metal Gear Solid 3 remake rumour is a pretty good one this time

There’s been a lot of Metal Gear Solid 3 remake rumours, but this time there’s some actual evidence that something is really happening.

Rumours of a Silent Hill 2 remake were going around for years before Konami actually announced one and yet in all that time there was never any proof, just unsubstantiated rumours.

It’s been the same situation with Konami’s rumoured remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, which has been constantly mentioned as on the way but without there ever being any evidence.

There still isn’t a smoking gun but Hogwarts Legacy composer J. Scott Rakozy last night teased something on Instagram that sounds very much like the Metal Gear Solid theme tune. He then quickly ended up deleting the post, which is always a good sign it’s something that shouldn’t have been made public.

Of course, someone saved the video anyway, which really does sound a lot like the Metal Gear Solid theme. (The fact that it’s a little different than you remember is probably because the original composer is thought to have plagiarised the original tune from a work by Russian composer Georgy Sviridov, something creator Hideo Kojima only found out about several years later.)

One fan even points out that you can see what seems to be footage of someone moving through a jungle – the setting of Metal Gear Solid 3 – right at the top of the screen, although that’s a bit of a stretch.

The video has the caption ‘If you know, you know.’ Which could mean almost anything, although it does seem to imply that Rakozy is purposefully teasing some kind of secret.

There is one boring explanation for all this though and that’s that there was a similar rumour a few weeks ago, about Donna Burke recording a new version of the Metal Gear Solid 3 theme tune, but it turned out it was for a soundtrack album and not a game.

That could be what this is as well, but that doesn’t explain why Rakozy deleted the Instagram post, especially as Burke simply explained what was happening and that was that.

As for why Konami would start with Metal Gear Solid 3, there’s two obvious reasons: 1) it’s arguably the best entry in the series and 2) it’s chronologically the first.

The second reason is fairly weak though, as that means the next remake would be Portable Ops, which it’s hard to imagine even hardcore fans getting very excited about.

It would also leave the original Metal Gear Solid eighth in line for a remake, which seems a really bad idea given it’s the one everyone wants – not least because even remasters of the PlayStation 1 version look and play pretty bad nowadays.

Of course, Konami could easily skip some of the games – Metal Gear Solid 5 doesn’t need a remake and it’s hard to imagine them remaking the NES games – but it does all seem a bit random before they’ve even begun.

Konami has repeatedly said they have new game announcements due soon and it’s widely imagined that they’ll be at either Microsoft or Sony’s summer preview events, although whether they’ll unveil a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake there we probably won’t know until it happens.
