Amy suffered a panic attack while on a bus (Picture: ITV)
As she continues to deal with the emotional and psychological effects of being raped by Aaron Sandford (James Craven) in Coronation Street, Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) tried once again to carry on with her life as normal in Monday (May 1)’s episode.
She told her parents she was going into town to do some shopping with a friend. Steve (Simon Gregson) offered to give her a lift, but Amy insisted that she would be fine on the bus.
Once she was on the bus, though, she quickly became overwhelmed by being surrounded by strangers and in her mind she was taken back to the night of the rape as she started to panic. It wasn’t long before she had to rush off the bus, begging the driver to stop to let her off.
Back at home she told Steve what had happened and worried about how she hadn’t even been able to take a simple bus ride. She couldn’t help being scared about how much this would affect her future – would she even be able to complete her university course?
One of the features of the way this storyline has played out is that while Amy’s life has been completely disrupted by what happened, to the point where she can’t even do the simple things she used to take for granted, Aaron life has continued pretty much as normal.
Although we’ve seen him having occasional doubts, he’s convinced himself that the worst thing he did on the night of the rape was to have sex with Amy behind Summer (Harriet Bibby)’s back. He refuses to accept that by having sex with Amy when she was too drunk to know what was happening, let alone consent, what he did was rape.

There was bad news for him in the episode, however, as his dad Eric (Craig Cheetham) came to see him to tell him that his nan had died. Eric wanted to take Abi (Sally Carman) and Aaron to the bistro to say thank you to Abi for looking after his son following his split with Summer.
While they were at the bistro Steve and Tracy (Kate Ford) walked in, and Tracy immediately picked a fight with Abi over Aaron being there. Abi asked why Tracy was still ‘banging on’ about Aaron after Amy had admitted he hadn’t raped her.

‘You’re stupid if you think it’s that simple,’ Tracy replied, as she knows that reporting Aaron to the police took a huge emotional toll on her daughter and she withdrew the allegations in the hope that it would make everything easier to cope with.
As Abi glanced back at Aaron and Eric, is she starting to have doubts about Aaron’s story?
