Want to spice up your sex life?
For a sensual, steamy experience, you might consider introducing the Amazon sex position to your boudoir.
PSA: this has nothing to do with the online delivery service or the rainforest, but it does offer flexibility, intimacy and lusty powerplay potential.
If you’d like to give it a whirl, here’s everything you need to know about the Amazon sex position and its benefits.
How to do the Amazon sex position?
To get into the Amazon, the partner with a penis (or a strap-on) lies underneath, raising their legs towards their chest and bending them into a 90-degree angle.
The individual on top then needs to squat into position, et voila. And that needn’t always involve penetration of the vagina either – you can experiment with anal, too.

‘The Amazon is traditionally seen as a penis-in-vagina sex position, but a strap-on allows for easier penetration,’ Ness Cooper, clinical sexologist and founder of The Sex Consultant explains.
‘Sometimes, the position can make it harder to insert the whole penis due to thighs and glutes getting in the way.’
If you’re trying it anally, that can allow for more intimate, eye-to-eye contact.
‘It can also allow the person on top to enjoy additional stimulation to the penis, clitoris or vagina with hands or sex toys,’ adds Ness.
Benefits of the Amazon sex position
For those that struggle with dyspareunia (pain during sex), the Amazon can be a more comfortable alternative to the traditional cowgirl position, as offers shallower penetration.
It also gives the person on top more control over the level of penetration they receive and allows them to be in a dominant position, alongside adding an extra visual layer for the partner on the bottom.
‘This position allows for eye contact during penetration, promoting intimacy and connection,’ adds sex and relationship therapist Rhian Kivits. ‘This can also facilitate non-verbal communication.’
Looking to try a threesome? The Amazon is a fun position to experiment with in this scenario, opening up space for the person on top to enjoy nipple play, clitoral stimulation or similar from another partner. Likewise, the individual doing the penetrating can use their hands elsewhere, or even welcome a little face-sitting.
Tips for trying the Amazon sex position
The Amazon requires a significant amount of muscle engagement for the person doing the penetrating, and it can get tiring quite quickly. If you do find the energy flame dimming, wrapping your legs around your partner may reduce this.
Similarly, using a rolled-up towel or pillow beneath the lumbar spine can help to raise the hips of the person doing the penetrating. This way, less flexibility is needed, and it can also be beneficial if the partner on top experiences any coordination issues.

‘Those who struggle with foreskin retraction may find this position uncomfortable,’ Ness says, but this can be mitigated by wearing a condom – and don’t forget the lube.
As with any sexual experience, communication is fundamental when trying the Amazon. Make sure to check in with your partner, but don’t be too hard on yourself if your first attempt doesn’t quite hit the spot.
‘What works for our bodies and our relationship dynamics is unique to each individual and couple,’ Rhian concludes.
‘It helps to be open to explore without expectations so that you’re not disappointed and you avoid feelings of failure.’
