Barry Humphries was never afraid to make jabs at high-flying figures, and the same goes for the most powerful politicians in Britain.

On Saturday April 22, it was announced that the celebrated performer, known for his comedy genius and characters including the beloved Dame Edna Everage, had died at the age of 89.

The entertainer died following complications from hip replacement surgery, as tributes poured in from his celebrity friends and devastated fans alike.

Following his death, many people have remembered several of Humphries’ most memorable moments, including an unforgettable appearance he made on This Morning and the time he had King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla in hysterics while crashing the royal box at the 2013 Royal Variety Performance.

On Monday’s Good Morning Britain, former politician Jeffrey Archer, a close friend of Humphries’, spoke to Ed Balls and Susanna Reid via video chat about his late pal.

When questioned over his views on the current state of politics in the UK, Archer responded by sharing a conversation that he had with Humphries before his death.

‘Barry said to me, “Are you aware Jeffrey” – which of course I was – he said, “Are you aware Ukraine is now run by a comedian? Do you think this happened because we’ve had three in a row in England?”’ Archer shared.

Balls and Reid guffawed with laughter, remarking: ‘Well finished, Jeffrey Archer.’

Former Labour politician Balls picked up on the cutting remark made by Humphries, quipping: ‘Three in a row. How revealing.’

After Reid asked if that included the current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Balls responded: ‘It does! Gosh.’

To end his conversation on GMB, Archer paid homage to the late Australian satirist, saying: ‘Let us not forget when we leave today, that we lost two people on the same day.

‘We lost Barry Humphries, one of the great comedians of all time, and we lost Dame Edna on the same day – a great man, and a great woman.’

It was recently revealed that prior to Humphries’ death, he was said to have been planning a comeback for his character Sir Les Patterson, a lecherous Australian statesman.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
