It’s official – no other Englishman in history has scored more goals for England than Harry Kane.

How many penalties has Harry Kane scored for England?

The Tottenham striker earnt that honour after scoring a penalty in the Euro 2024 qualifying win over Italy to move one clear of Wayne Rooney on 54 goals.

But exactly how many penalties has Kane scored for England – and which other players have scored the most spot kicks for the Three Lions in their history?

    Let’s crunch the numbers.

How many penalties does Harry Kane have for England?

Kane has scored a total of 18 penalties for England throughout his career, excluding those taken in a penalty shootout.

This means that, of his 54 goals for England, exactly one third of them have arrived via the penalty spot.

Kane’s tenth penalty for his country – against Poland in a World Cup qualifier in March 2021 – was enough for him to move past Frank Lampard to become the most successful penalty taker in England’s history.

Incidentally, that spot-kick against the Poles at Wembley saw Kane become just the third England player ever to score on all seven days of the week, following in the footsteps of Lampard and Rooney.

And with the 29 year-old having taken 22 penalties in total for the Three Lions, this gives Kane a success rate of 82% from the penalty spot throughout his international career.

Whilst Kane’s 22nd penalty will enter the history books as the one that broke the all-time goalscoring record for England, it is 21st that was arguably the most important.

That was the second penalty in the World Cup quarter-final against France, which Kane blasted over the bar having scored his first penalty just minutes earlier.

His other misses in an England shirt are against Turkey in a friendly in 2016, against Kosovo in a Euro 2020 qualifier in 2019, and against Denmark in the Euro 2020 semi-final – although he did score the follow-up attempt to book England’s place in the final.

For comparison, Kane has scored 30 of his 34 penalties in the Premier League for Tottenham, giving the striker a success rate of 88% for his club.

Who has scored the most penalties for England?

A total of 142 penalties have been taken in total throughout England’s history (not including a penalty shootout).

Only Kane, Lampard, Rooney, Alan Shearer, Ron Flowers and David Beckham have scored at least five from 12 yards out.

Of those to have scored at least three, only Rooney, Flowers, Geoff Hurst, Alf Ramsey, Marcus Rashford and Mick Channon can boast a perfect 100% record.

Top scoring penalty takers in England’s history

    Harry Kane – 18
    Frank Lampard – 9
    Wayne Rooney – 7
    Alan Shearer – 6
    Ron Flowers – 6
    David Beckham -5
    Gary Lineker -4
    Geoff Hurst – 4
    David Platt – 3
    Tom Finney – 3
    Alf Ramsey – 3
    Bobby Charlton – 3
    Marcus Rashford – 3
    Allan Clarke – 3
    Mick Channon – 3

    A record-extending feat for Kane.
