There could be a good reason that Insomniac is being secretive about Spider-Man 2, as a toy suggests its plot involves the multiverse.
The world seems obsessed with multiverses at the moment, especially in the world of superhero movies where you can’t get away from them, whether it’s Marvel, DC, Sony, or Oscar winning one-offs.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was one of the first movies to popularise the concept, although Miles Morales has always been portrayed in the comics as coming from a different universe (the recently revived Ultimate universe).
In the Spider-Man game Miles is just someone else that lives in New York City, alongside Peter Parker, but the product description for a new Spider-Man 2 action figure suggests that multiverse shenanigans may be involved in the new game.
The Marvel Legends action figure is of Miles Morales and is specifically based on his appearance in Spider-Man 2.
That’s all well and good but what’s really interesting is that Miles is described as someone who ‘discovers allies and enemies across the multiverse – and at home in New York’.
The action figure also has ‘venom power’ hands, but that’s an electric power he’s always had in the comics, where his abilities aren’t exactly the same as Peter Parker.
The only thing we know for sure about the sequel is that Peter and Miles are in it and so are bad guys Venom and Kraven the Hunter. There’s also hints of the Lizard and at least one Goblin character, although those are only implied by the end of the first game.
Given the lack of official information there’s been much speculation about the game, with the one and only trailer showing so much teamwork between the two Spider-Men that many have imagined there might be a co-op mode.
There’s still no real clue either way but the plot involving the multiverse would be another good explanation for the lack of information so far. It would also be a way to avoid the game just being set in New York again, which is a concern given how many Spider-Man games there have been over the years.
Of course, the toy description could just be some kind of error – perhaps it got mixed up with a Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse toy (the sequel to the original film) – but it was specially sent to CBR as an early preview, so you’d think Marvel would have been careful about it.
