Heavy losses reported in Ukraine war as fight for Bakhmut continues

The battle for Bakhmut between Ukraine and Russia continues with both sides claiming to have inflicted heavy losses on the other.

Despite having little strategic value, the city has become a focal point for Russian commanders in their attempts to control the whole of the Donetsk region.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that over 1,100 Russian soldiers had died in the past few days, with 1,500 more seriously injured. Whilst Russia reported killing over 220 Ukrainian service members in the last 24 hours.

The Russian mercenary Wagner Group is at the heart of the attack on Bakhmut, with its leader staking his reputation on seizing the city. Despite this, the Institute for the Study of War reports that the offensive is stalling.

Bakhmut was once best known for its salt and gypsum mines and a huge winery, but now only a few thousand people remain.

Western officials estimate that between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian troops have been killed or injured so far in and around Bakhmut.
