Kremlin accuses Royal Navy of being behind ‘terrorist attack’ on Nord Stream

The UK government has rubbished wild claims from the Kremlin that the Royal Navy was involved in the Nord Stream explosion.

Finger-pointing continues over mysterious blasts which tore apart seabed pipes carrying gas from Russia to Germany on September 26.

Western governments are confident sabotage is at play, though conclusive evidence for who was responsible has not been publicly shared. 

Vladimir Putin has previously made it clear he’ll use Europe’s energy dependency as leverage this winter but denies he directed the attack and has previously accused the US of involvement.

Now his propaganda machine has claimed for the first time that ‘British specialists’ were involved in laying the explosives, describe it as a ‘terrorist attack’.

Its defence ministry claimed without evidence that personnel from the same unit directed Ukrainian drone attacks on ships of Russian Black Sea fleet in Crimea this morning.

A statement read: ‘According to available information, representatives of this unit of the British Navy took part in the planning, provision and implementation of a terrorist attack in the Baltic Sea on September 26 this year – blowing up the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines.’

The UK Ministry of Defence has rebuffed the accusation and said the Kremlin is trying to divert attention away from its struggles on the battlefield. 

A statement read: ‘To detract from their disastrous handling of the illegal invasion of Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defence is resorting to peddling false claims of an epic scale.

‘This invented story, says more about arguments going on inside the Russian government than it does about the West.’

The claims mark the first time the Kremlin has provided any substance to its vague accusations that the West was behind the Nord blasts.

Both Sweden and Denmark, who are leading investigations at the scene in the Baltic Sea, have concluded that early indications point to deliberate sabotage with powerful explosions.
