    Ajax 0-3 Liverpool

Liverpool secured the point they needed to progress to the Champions League knockout stages with a game to spare after a convincing win over Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena last night.

Mohamed Salah, a fit-again Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott got the goals for Jurgen Klopp’s side who put last weekend’s dismal 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest firmly behind them.

But only after they had ridden their luck in Amsterdam with Steven Berghuis hitting the base of the right-hand upright for Ajax with just Alisson to beat after two minutes.

The Brazil keeper saved Jorge Sanchez’s blast while Trent Alexander-Arnold made a crucial block from ex-Southampton man Dusan Tadic.

The Reds had barely got going but there was only one side in it after Salah clipped in Jordan Henderson’s fine pass to break the deadlock after 42 minutes.

And it should have been 2-0 before the break but Nunez contrived to hit the post when it seemed easier to convert Roberto Firmino’s cross. But the Uruguay striker was celebrating four minutes after the restart when he glanced in Andrew Robertson’s corner.

Three minutes later teenager Elliott, who also scored in the 7-1 drubbing of Rangers in the last round of matches, added a third by firing Salah’s excellent pass into the roof of the net.

Klopp’s smile soon disappeared when Henderson was left clutching his knee following Edson Alvarez’s challenge with the midfielder having to limp off.

But the German will be more than happy to reach the last 16 with a final group game against unbeaten leaders Napoli to come at Anfield next week.
