    Tottenham 1-1 Sporting

Tottenham remain in control of their Champions League destiny after Rodrigo Bentancur bagged a late equaliser against Sporting Lisbon.

Bentancur cancelled out Marcus Edwards’ first-half goal and Harry Kane thought he had grabbed a 95th-minute winner, only for VAR to rule it out for offside against the England captain –Spurs boss Antonio Conte sent off for his angry protests.

But the draw means Conte’s side go into their final match at Marseille next Tuesday top of Group D although it was a tough night for the hosts once former Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards had given Sporting the lead.

The 23-year-old scored a delightful 22nd-minute opener against his former employers as Spurs struggled despite Conte making six changes from the home Premier League defeat by Newcastle on Saturday.

Early chances for Matheus Reis and Paulinho came and went before Edwards’ moment of magic.

The midfielder – who never made a first-team appearance for Spurs – dribbled towards a retreating Tottenham defence before picking his spot.

Spurs came out a different team after the break and visiting goalkeeper Antonio Adan had to be on top form to keep out Eric Dier, Heung-min Son and Matt Doherty while Hugo Lloris superbly denied Flavio Nazinho. But Bentancur levelled with ten minutes left, heading in Ivan Perisic’s cross.

Kane thought he had found a winner in injury time but his crisp finish was ruled out, leaving Conte fuming.
