Stormzy has opened up on his painful split from radio and TV presenter Maya Jama but says it helped him ‘grow up.’
The former couple, who got together before either became well known in the public eye, ended their four-year romance in 2019 after the Big For Your Boots hitmaker says he ‘made a mistake.’
Speaking in Louis Theroux’s new interview series, he says their split enabled him to grow up and focus on what he wanted in life. Nonetheless, he called the end of the relationship, ‘the biggest loss a man can have.’
‘My break-up, that was probably the biggest catalyst for growth as a man,’ Stormzy, 29, said in quotes obtained by The Sun.
‘It was like, OK, you made a mistake and you lose someone you loved, someone you cared for, someone who is special to you. Away from someone passing away, that’s the biggest loss you can have.’
The rapper and Maya, 28, first met in October 2014 at the Red Bull Culture Clash and began dating the following January.

However, they split in late 2019 amid allegations he had been unfaithful, though at the time an insider said Maya wanted to ‘focus on her TV and radio career’.
While he didn’t go into the reasoning behind the split, he admitted he didn’t appreciate his former partner at the time.

‘There were other things in terms of mistakes I’d made,’ he admitted. ‘I didn’t do what a man should do to fully appreciate, love and care for his woman,’ but added that he had learned from his mistakes and would be a better partner if love came around again.
‘Long story short, I learned that if I don’t want to feel like that again, and if I believe that God will bless me again with an amazing woman and a family and marriage and all of that kind of thing, I have to do all the necessary work to never be in that situation again,’ he said.

He revealed he wants marriage and to settle down with a family of his own, but admitted that looking for love was not an easy task as he has to keep things under the radar so as not to ‘blow up’ a potential girlfriend’s life.
Stormzy concluded: ‘I’m still trying to work out the solution. I’ll just wait for God to present me with my situation with my woman.’
