If you hadn’t heard, the French bob is back, and we’re here for it.
For those who don’t know, the French bob is a chin-length bob paired with brow-length bangs.
It’s a homage to styles from the 1920s flapper era but, these days, it’s a little more choppy.
‘The 1920’s French haircut has been modernised for 2022 by including a blunt cut, heavy messy texture, and embracing natural beachy wavy hair,’ Gökhan VAYNİ, a hair specialist at Vera Clinic, tells Metro.co.uk
Let’s be honest, cutting your hair to above chin-level in a bid to reinvent yourself is tempting, especially as the seasons change.
But how many inches of hair are you really willing to sacrifice for a haircut that might not even look good?
If you’re worrying about whether you’d actually suit such a drastic style, you’re in luck: it’s possible to make the French bob look good on any face shape.
Celebrity stylist Carl Gambrell recommends this cut on oval or square face shapes, as it helps to draw attention to the cheekbones without emphasising the jawline.
‘But au contraire,’ he tells us, ‘it all comes down to knowing the exact length and where to layer.’
Gökhan agrees.
‘If you have an oval face shape,’ he says, ‘you can make any bob haircut work for you by combining it with a deep side part (with or without bangs) as this creates elegance and balances the oval shape.’
They also work for people with round faces as they naturally elongate face shapes, he adds.
For those with square-shaped faces, Gökhan says chin-length cuts with lots of layers are very flattering.
‘It helps draw attention to your cheekbones without emphasizing the jawline too much,’ he says.
Finally, if you have a heart-shaped face, Gökhan says a French bob would work best with mid-length side bangs and sleek layers from behind.
‘This will soften your chin and highlight your cheekbones,’ he says.
Hair type also plays into things and, although French bobs favour those with thicker hair, Carl adds that those with finer hair can add some ‘very uniquely placed extensions’ for that sharper look and added volume.
