Newcastle 1-0 Everton
Miguel Almiron lit up St James’ Park with a sublime first-half finish as Newcastle got the better of Everton.
The in-form Paraguayan took centre stage in what was an often fractious first half with a lovely curling finish past Jordan Pickford from outside the box after a build-up involving Bruno Guimaraes, Callum Wilson and Joelinton. Everton were unhappy, claiming they should have had a foul moments earlier.
It could have been two soon after, with Guimaraes just missing the target, while the visitors also felt Joelinton should have been off for a second booking after a clumsy challenge on Amadou Onana.
Tempers flared again before the break after Toffees attacker Anthony Gordon went down claiming a penalty.

Almiron once more went close from 20 yards early in the second half.
One bright note for Everton, who failed to trouble home keeper Nick Pope when they did enjoy pressure, was the return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the starting XI.
