Is The School For Good And Evil based on a book?

The School For Good And Evil is a new fantasy film that has been released on Netflix.

The fairytale movie – directed by Paul Feig – follows best friends Sophie (Sophia Anne Caruso) and Agatha (Sofia Wylie) who are kidnapped and taken to the titular school.

After their fortunes are reversed, the duo tries to figure out a way to return home. In doing so, their friendship is put to the test.

Since it was launched on the streaming platform, viewers have been wondering whether the film is based on a book. Luckily for you, we have all the answers.

Is The School For Good And Evil based on a book?

The School for Good and Evil is based on the epic international best-selling 2013 novel of the same name by Soman Chainani.

There are six books in the series, with the sequel, A World Without Princes, published in 2014.

The Last Ever After came out in 2015, followed by The Ever Never Handbook in 2016, Quests for Glory in 2017, A Crystal of Time in 2019, and One True King in 2020.

Chainani was consulted during the production stages and understood particular plot points from the books would be adapted or omitted.

Speaking to the Radio Times, he said: ‘Only a foolish author would insist on a slavish translation that speaks to no one but the most literal of readers — a reader’s imagination is usually much more vivid and precise than anything that can be put on screen.’

Feig previously said that the film is ‘all based on the story’, although explained there are changes.

Speaking to IGN, he said: ‘It’s all based on the story, obviously, because it’s about the characters on their journey and making sure that that’s what grounds us and keeps us going.

‘But then it’s about going, okay, these are the main set-pieces from the book that are important to people.

‘These are the ones that I think we can make really cool, and really advance the story and tell the characters through them, and then you just apply, “how do we do it in a way that we haven’t seen before?”

    ‘It’s fun, it’s a real exciting challenge.’

The School For Good And Evil is available to stream on Netflix.
