Hollyoaks actor Joe Tracini said he tried to take his life five times as he opened up about living with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) on This Morning.

The 34-year-old played Dennis Savage in the Channel 4 soap from 2011 to 2014 and for a brief stint in 2018.

Speaking to hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on Wednesday’s This Morning, Joe spoke about BPD, which is the subject of his best-selling book Ten Things I Hate About Me.

BPD is a disorder of mood and how a person interacts with others and symptoms are emotional instability, disturbed patterns of thinking or perception, impulsive behaviour and intense but unstable relationships with others, according to the NHS.

Alison asked the performer: ‘15% of people with BPD [die by] suicide and 40% attempt to [die by] suicide and you’re trying to live in the obviously the 40% is that right?’

Joe replied: ‘I’ve tried to take my own life technically five times, but four of those were sort of like halfway,’ adding that he called an ambulance after an overdose.

He continued: ‘But I do know that I was going to take my own life because I was tired. I wasn’t suicidal at that point. They are different things being suicidal is a mindset, not an event.

‘So I am suicidal now in the fact that I think those thoughts regularly throughout day.’

Joe also praised Dawn French for reading his book about mental health and providing a recommendation.

He added as a child he camped out in a tent in his home and watched The Vicar of Dibley non-stop during one summer.

While he has yet to meet the actor, he said that she regularly checks in on him.

Previously, Joe penned a first-person piece for Metro.co.uk hoping to inspire hope in those suffering with mental health.

He wrote: ‘You are definitely not hopeless. You might feel like you are, because if you’re looking for hope it means you had some but you lost it. You might have less hope now than you’ve had in the past, but you’re not hopeless.’

This Morning continues tomorrow at 10am on ITV.
