Lewis Capaldi reveals road trip to Ireland ‘humanised’ bestie Niall Horan after One Direction fame and jokes ‘he was a bit of an a*****e’

Lewis Capaldi and Niall Horan knew each other pretty well before but, after their epic road trip to Ireland, there’s certainly nothing to hide now.

The pop hitmakers are set to star in Niall Horan’s Homecoming: The Road to Mullingar with Lewis Capaldi, which will debut on Amazon Prime Video.

As it says on the tin, the one-off special will follow the pair as they return to Niall’s hometown in Ireland where it all began before he propelled to fame with One Direction and prior to Lewis dazzling us with his stirring ballads.

The pals managed to pack a bunch of fun into three days, with highlights including a visit to the Guinness Storehouse, meeting world class guitar maker George Lowden and local Dublin busker Jacob Koopman.

It was certainly an eye-opening experience for Lewis, who hails from Scotland, and gave him a chance to see Niall, 29, in his natural habitat * David Attenborough voice * away from the glitz and glam of the showbiz industry.

Recalling their adventure enthusiastically, Lewis, 26, told Metro.co.uk alongside his bestie: ‘I met Niall’s mum and dad, that was the first time I ever met them and I’ve obviously seen where they come from – very humble beginnings old Niall, I never knew that about him.

The two packed in lots of activities across the three days, including visiting the Guinness Storehouse (Picture: Lucy Foster)

‘We’re pretty good chums so I don’t think we learnt too much new about each other, but it was just nice to see where they came from, meet the parents, I met some of your cousins.’

Referring to Niall’s global stardom as one-fifth of 1D, Lewis added: ‘It was just nice because when I met Niall, he was “Niall Horan!” and this famous guy.

‘So I think it helps because you’re friends on a deeper level when you see where someone’s from and their background because when I met Niall, he was already one of the most famous people in the world so it humanises him a bit…’

Lewis then quipped: ‘Because he was a bit of an a*****e before and now I feel like I get where he’s coming from.’

Niall said it was a no-brainer that he’d choose Lewis for his homecoming travels (Picture: Lucy Foster)

Out of all his friends in the world, Niall chose Lewis to join him on his homecoming trip but it was a no-brainer decision.

‘It’s pretty obvious why [I chose him], he’s mad up for it,’ Niall laughed.

‘I’ve got a couple of famous friends but he’s the only one I’m really friends with so we made a good TV show out of it. He loves Ireland, he loves going to do gigs, he loves Guinness, so do I, we get on well, the Scottish-Irish relations are strong so he was the perfect man for the trip.’

Lewis joked that his first thoughts of Mullingar was that it was a ‘hell hole’ but, really, he ‘loved it’ as the town reminded him of where he grew up in Glasgow.

Homecoming will be available to view on Prime Video in the following countries starting from 8pm on October 21 BST, and October 22 for USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Germany, Austria and Italy.

The two embarked on a three-day trip to Niall’s hometown in Mullingar for a one-off documentary.
