When Julia*, 37, and her husband of over 10 years began facing financial pressure, cracks started showing in their marriage.
The pressure proved to be something of a breaking point for Julia – and she took a shocking decision.
‘I wouldn’t usually call myself an impulsive person,’ she tells Metro.co.uk.
‘I’m normally very restrained, but I’d reached a point where I sort of just flipped and told myself: “I’m going to do it”.’
The ‘it’ in question was joining a dating site for married people and beginning an affair with another man.
Now, not only does Julia have a secret boyfriend, but this new man in her life has started helping Julia make her monthly mortgage payments.
She recalls: ‘I was so hesitant and nervous the first time we met.
‘My emotions were all over the place and I didn’t know if I was doing the right thing.
‘I felt guilty, but he was so nice and friendly and attractive.
‘We went for a walk the first time which wasn’t too intense.’

Julia, who shares three children with her husband, says ‘he’d obviously be distraught’ if he found out about the affair.
‘After everything we’ve built together, and our children,’ she adds, ‘I’ve broken his trust.
‘I try not to think about it because I’m so enjoying the time I’m spending with my boyfriend at the moment. I don’t want anything to ruin that.’
While she says she still loves her husband, Julia has also developed feelings for her new lover.
She says: ‘Me and my boyfriend have tried to ban any talk of our home lives or work, so we can just enjoy that time together. It’s lovely.
‘With my husband, it’s a different sort of connection. I love him, but we have the pressure of children, the moans and groans of work and then the finances which heaps loads of pressure on our relationship.’
When it comes to the help her boyfriend is offering with their money problems, Julia said she never asked for his money, but he was keen to offer aid nonetheless.
‘It hadn’t ever crossed my mind,’ she explains, ‘but we’ve talked about money when we were together, and he knew about my situation at home and the stress it is causing.
‘He’s quite successful and really genuine, and he said he’d help.
‘I didn’t want the money, but also I didn’t say no, and it’s gone from there.’
Julia’s lover has now secretly paid thousands towards her and her husband’s mortgage.
To do so, he simply puts money into her personal account, which she then draws from to pay her share of the mortgage each month.
When asked what the future might hold, Julia says she hasn’t thought that far ahead yet.
‘I don’t want to either,’ she goes on.
‘The extra money is really helpful even though I do feel guilty, but there’s also a lot of romance in our relationship, and I’m really enjoying the time we get to spend together at the moment.’

And as for her husband?
‘I still love him,’ she repeats, ‘but it’s a different type of love.
‘My mum always says: “You always have enough love to give everyone”, and that’s how I feel. They’re just different types.’
