Tory MPs have told Liz Truss she is ‘in office but not in power’ after an abysmal day in Whitehall.
The Prime Minister has pledged to lead the Conservative Party into the next general election, but the ‘men in grey suits’ are circling around Downing Street after her disastrous mini-Budget was ripped to shreds by her newly installed chancellor.
Ms Truss was dubbed the ‘ghost PM’ as she sat silently behind Jeremy Hunt while he laid waste to her financial plans in the Commons yesterday.
There are now reports suggesting Penny Mordaunt, who confirmed Ms Truss was not ‘hiding under a desk’ as she deputised for her on Keir Starmer’s urgent question, is planning a coup with Rishi Sunak.
It’s claimed the former chancellor is hoping for a return to the Treasury under Ms Mordaunt’s leadership, but this has been denied by both MPs.
Speaking after a bombshell day in Parliament, Ms Truss admitted her tax-cutting plan had gone ‘too far and too fast’.

‘I want to accept responsibility and say sorry for the mistakes that have been made,’ she told the BBC.
‘I was expecting it to be tough and it has been tough, I think it’s fair to say.’
A Downing Street source told the Mail the PM is facing a ‘critical’ few days in her bid to stay in power.
Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of the 1922 committee, is said to have warned Ms Truss that dozens of her MPs want her gone.

Former minister Mark Garnier heaped scorn on her position, saying she was ‘in office but is not in power’.
He added: ‘The question is do we give her a chance or do we rip the plaster off?’
Armed forces minister James Heappey was sent out to defend his boss this morning, insisting she is doing a ‘good job’.
He told Sky News: ‘She’s very much our Prime Minister and for what it’s worth I think she’s doing a good job.’
