A young man has died after staggering into a beer garden with fatal stab wounds.

Drinkers desperately tried to help the 24-year-old and stop the bleeding while waiting for an ambulance to arrive in Kingston, southwest London, shortly before 8.30pm on Thursday.

But despite paramedics and an air ambulance being scrambled the victim died at the scene, opposite a park and The Albion pub, soon after.

The man has yet to be named but his family is being supported by specially trained officers. A post-mortem examination will take place on Sunday.

Scotland Yard has now launched a murder investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley said:‘We believe that the victim was attacked in Fairfield Road. He then made his way to Fairfield East where he went into a pub garden and customers provided initial assistance and called the emergency services.

‘I’d like to thank everyone who has come forward so far to help with our investigation, your help is vital to understanding what happened. It is really important that if you witnessed any part of this incident, even if you don’t think it was important, please come forward and speak to us.’

Superintendent Richard Smith added: ‘I understand the concern this tragic incident will cause the local community, especially given the significant number of people who offered this young man assistance in the immediate aftermath of the incident.’

There have been no arrests and enquiries into the circumstances continue.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is urged to call 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote reference 7902/13OCT22.
