Strictly Come Dancing has been a ‘challenging’ experience for Matt Goss: ‘Coming out of my shell is genuinely very challenging’

It’s been a rollercoaster start to Strictly Come Dancing for Matt Goss, who says the experience has been ‘challenging emotionally’.

After landing in the bottom two in the second week and narrowly missing out on being eliminated, before managing to avoid dancing for his life last week, the singer has admitted the series has pushed him out of his comfort zone.

Despite having nearly 40 years of performing under his belt, the front man of 80s boy band Bros has said while he’s happiest on stage, being a contestant on Strictly has so far been difficult.

‘Look, I’m quite a shy person off stage, I’m certainly quite reserved, but when I’m on stage I do feel very at peace and it’s the happiest place for me in my life when I’m on stage,’ he told Pat Sharp on Greatest Hits Radio on Friday.

‘Off stage is difficult for me, so this environment is challenging emotionally, coming out of my shell is genuinely very challenging.

‘There’s no ego in my heart and it’s just about that moment when you have to come out of your comfort zone.’

For the past decade Goss has been performing four nights a week in Las Vegas, but it’s been an adjustment to be so exposed when taking on dancing.

‘[In Vegas] is definitely where I excel and where I feel very connected to an audience, but this experience is all brand new to me and I just have to put that Vegas showman into the dancing,’ he added.

Paired with professional dancer Nadiya Bychkova, the past three weeks have seen the pair at the bottom end of the leader board twice, where they narrowly avoided being eliminated in the second week.

This week they’ll be jiving to Paul McCartney’s version of All Shook Up and while Goss has said he is enjoying learning the routine, it has been ‘intimidating’.

‘All I know is that my knees are hurting. The jive is relentless from start to finish and it completely takes over your life,” he said.

‘It does allow you to eat as much curry as you want because you burn so many calories but it’s intimidating.

‘It’s also been a lot of fun though, and I’m looking forward to dancing it on Saturday night.’

When questioned by long-time friend Sharp on whether he’d been wearing tight trousers to gain extra points from judge Craig Revel Horwood, Goss made sure to say that that wasn’t the case, but did acknowledge the pants ‘don’t leave a lot to the imagination.’

After living in the United States, Goss’s addition to the Strictly cast came as he moved back to the United Kingdom after years away.

He previously said he missed the people, going for a pint of Guinness and a ‘proper’ bacon sandwich.
