Jurgen Klopp believes Premier League officials missed an ‘obvious’ error in Arsenal’s opening goal against Liverpool on Sunday.

Gabriel Martinelli gave the Gunners a perfect start at the Emirates Stadium with a goal after 58 seconds, while Mikel Arteta’s side went on to run out 3-2 winners.

But questions have been raised over Bukayo Saka’s part in the build up to Martinelli’s goal as the England international appeared to be in an offside position when he received a pass from Ben White.

However, VAR was unable to conclusively determine whether Saka was offside as none of Hawk-Eye’s five cameras had him in shot when White played the ball forwards.

That meant VAR was unable to use the offside lines in order to make a judgement on whether Saka was ahead of the final Liverpool defender.

Klopp, however, believes officials should have noticed Saka’s offside in the build up to Arsenal’s opening goal.

‘The first goal, how I heard now, of Arsenal was pretty likely offside,’ Klopp said.

‘We just cannot find out because the camera was not there, or the angle, whatever.

‘But when I saw the picture I thought it’s obvious that Saka came back from an offside position.

‘And then there happens a penalty which was not a penalty, and from that moment on we had to chase the game and Arsenal could counter-attack, and they had obviously then better situations.’
