Susanna Reid admits burning question her children have about Prince Philip while watching The Crown

Susanna Reid has opened up about the question her children have while watching The Crown, which pertains to the late Prince Philip and the title he held in the royal family.

This week, it was announced that King Charles III’s coronation is set to take place on Saturday May 6 next year, following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, aged 96.

During the coronation ceremony, Camilla will also be crowned as the Queen Consort, in line with Queen Elizabeth II’s wishes, which she laid out in a statement during her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

At the time, the monarch said: ‘When, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when the time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.’

On Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, presenters Richard Madeley and Susanna spoke about the King’s upcoming coronation next year.

Journalist Andrew Pierce claimed that when Camilla is anointed in the ceremony, ‘she will be the Queen’, comparing her to the Queen Mother when he speculated that ‘we no longer will be calling her Queen Consort’.

‘Just as the Queen Mother was when King George VI [had his] coronation, she will be anointed, so she is going to be the fully-fledged Queen,’ he said.

‘Who would have thought that as possible 20 years ago? Extraordinary,’ he added.

Susanna then questioned why the late Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, wasn’t known as the King Consort when his wife ascended the throne, as he was known as Prince Philip throughout his life.

‘How come that didn’t happen to the Duke of Edinburgh when the Queen became Queen? Is a question my children ask when I’m watching The Crown,’ she asked.

‘Because if he was anointed as a King, a King takes precedence over a Queen,’ Andrew responded.

While discussing King Charles’ coronation, Susanna also brought up questions that are being raised about certain aspects of the ritual, including the crown that Camilla will wear as Queen Consort.

‘Queen Consort’s crown, should it still be decorated with the 105-carat Kohinoor diamonds several nations including India claim as their own,’ she said, emphasising that ‘issues like that can be very sensitive’.

The GMB co-host also mentioned the coronation oil used in the ceremony, which apparently uses a ‘sacred and ancient recipe’ with ingredients including civet and ambergris – with civet coming from the ‘glands of an African cat’ and ambergris coming from ‘the stomach of a sperm whale’.

‘Probably time to get rid of things like that, isn’t it?’ Susanna quipped.

The full plans for King Charles III’s coronation day – reportedly known by the code name ‘Operation Golden Orb’ – are still being finalised.

However, the ‘deeply religious’ ceremony will be overseen by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in line with the King’s role as the head of the Church of England.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV. The Crown is available to stream on Netflix.
