Carole is fifth baker eliminated from Great British Bake Off 2022 tent after styling out ‘disaster’ puddings

One more baker has had to bid farewell on The Great British Bake Off 2022, with supermarket cashier Carole in the firing line last night as the fifth contestant to say goodbye.

On the most recent episode of the Channel 4 programme, the competitors took on Dessert Week, as they were tasked with concocting steamed puddings for their Signature, a lemon meringue pie for their Technical and a mousse-inspired dish for their Showstopper.

During the first challenge, judge Paul Hollywood warned the bakers: ‘The beauty of steamed puddings is the moisture, so the last thing you want to see is a dry sponge.’

While Carole’s steamed puddings didn’t turn out to plan, she did manage to put a positive spin on them when speaking to Paul and Prue Leith, as she attempted to find the silver lining in her collapsed desserts.

‘I know you said no more disasters, but I think I’ve done this one in style,’ she told the judges light-heartedly.

When the time came for the Technical, the only detailed instruction the bakers were given was what temperature to set their ovens, other than being told to ‘make a lemon meringue pie’.

At the start of the challenge, Prue told the contestants: ‘This is my favourite pud so please read the recipe very carefully.’

Unfortunately, Carole ended up at the bottom of the rankings, placing last out of the eight competitors in the tent.

The only challenge that could potentially save the fan-favourite baker in the competition was the Showstopper, as the culinary whizzes were told to create ‘a visually spectacular mousse-based dessert with a surprise inside’.

The dishes also had to include at least three other dessert-based elements, one of which needed to be baked.

Carole made a Strawberry Fields Showstopper, adorned with strawberries on top in a visually-pleasing design.

However, in the end, Paul and Prue decided that it was her time to exit the tent, becoming the fifth baker to do so after Will, Maisam, James and Rebs.

As she left the show, Carole said: ‘I’m very proud of myself. I came here to achieve something as I get older.’

Meanwhile, Dessert Week saw Sandro earn his very first Star Baker nod, while two-time Star Baker Janusz earned the top spot in the Technical Challenge.

The Great British Bake Off returns next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
