Colin Farrell tried to walk out of 15-minute standing ovation in Venice: ‘When my ego felt good enough’

Colin Farrell has revealed the honest truth about getting a 15-minute standing ovation at a film festival and, while flattering, is downright exhausting.

The Batman actor is currently starring in The Banshees of Inisherin alongside Brendan Gleeson and Kerry Condon. Directed by Martin MacDonagh, the comedy-drama takes place on a remote island off the coast of Ireland, and follows Padraic (Farrell) as he deals with the sudden end of his friendship with his pal Colm.

Padraic attempts to repair the damaged relationship with the help of his sister and a troubled young islander, but receives an ultimatum from Colm that poses shocking consequences.

The audience at Venice Film Festival loved the film so much that it received a rapturous reception – more specifically, a few rounds of applause lasting around 15 minutes.

As is tradition at film festivals, the cast is expected to courteously stick around for the entire standing ovation no matter how long it continues.

Colin, 46, apparently didn’t get the memo but found out the hard way when he tried to head for the exit stage left.

When asked what it’s like to receive the ovation, Colin said on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert: ‘Tiring. I tried to leave about the seventh minute…’

He then quipped: ‘When my ego felt good enough that I’d had enough.

‘I tried to leave and they said you can’t leave until everyone stops clapping. That’s when you start going down and signing autographs and I was then told that was breaking the f***ing rules as well.’

According to Variety at the time, The Banshees of Inisherin received the ‘longest and loudest reception’ out of any other film that had screened at that point.

The publication also noted that Colin broke with tradition and began signing autographs in the audience, so wasn’t exaggerating when recounting the tale to Colbert.

Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who is dating director Mcdonagh, was seen leaning over her chair to kiss her boyfriend during the ovation at one point, while the crowd reportedly leapt to their feet and even began to spill out onto the red carpet where the cast of Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling had arrived for their photo moment.

The Banshees of Inisherin arrives in cinemas on October 21.
