Championship club Middlesbrough have held talks over former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick becoming their new manager.
Carrick had a spell as caretaker manager of United in 2021 following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, before Ralf Rangnick stepped in for the rest of 2021-22.
The 41-year-old took charge of three games for United, beating Villarreal in the Champions League before a draw with Chelsea and a victory over Arsenal.
The Athletic are now reporting that Middlesbrough have held talks over Carrick regarding their vacant managerial role, following the sacking of Chris Wilder.
Middlesbrough, who last appeared in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season, have struggled so far this term and find themselves 21st in the second tier.
Carrick, meanwhile, became a coach at United under Jose Mourinho and also worked under Solskjaer before his spell as caretaker boss – leaving the club following Rangnick’s arrival – but he is now ‘weighing up’ a return to football.
He made 464 appearances for United as a player over a 12-year spell from 2006 until 2018, winning five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, the FA Cup and two League Cups.
Carrick was named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year on two occasions and was named United’s Players’ Player of the Year for 2012-13.
Following his departure from United, Carrick said: ‘My time at this great club will always rank as the best years of my career.
‘When I first signed over 15 years ago, I never in my wildest dreams could have imagined winning so many trophies and I will certainly never forget the fantastic memories both as a player and as a member of the coaching team.
‘I want to place on record my thanks to all of the players and a special mention goes to the backroom staff, working long hours with such a great group of people has been a real pleasure and I have made some long-lasting friendships.
‘I am, and will always be, a Manchester United fan and will come to as many matches as possible.’
