Hollyoaks star Jennifer Metcalfe has confirmed that she’s signed a new contract.

The actress, who portrays Mercedes McQueen, revealed that she ‘could not be happier’ to remain on the Channel 4 soap for another year.

Mercedes, as viewers know, is currently taking some time away from the eponymous village, after her son Bobby Costello (Jayden Fox) murdered killer Silas Blissett (Jeff Rawle).

‘I ended up having a nice summer off with Daye so it probably gives a little indication of what happens for a while,” said Jennifer to The Irish Sun. ‘Mercedes might need a little time away to catch a tan.

“They’re like: “Are you going to sign another year?” Hell yeah! I have signed until this time next year and could not be happier.

‘When I started, I remember thinking this is such a great job, and then all of a sudden it is nearly 20 years later.’

Mercedes left the village last month with Bobby in tow, as she was left incredibly concerned about her child’s well-being after he murdered his twisted granddad.

Silas, as viewers know, returned to the village to get his hands on Bobby, but decided to try to kill the McQueens while there, using an electrified life-size chessboard to do so.

    As you do.

Refusing to let her son end up in trouble with the law, Mercedes resolved to take Bobby out of the village – just the two of them – so that she can raise him away from all the bad memories in the hopes that she can make him see the error of his ways.

The former landlady of The Dog, however, will be back on our screens now that Jennifer has signed a new contract, and it looks like she’s not going anywhere anytime soon – and we couldn’t be happier about that!

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6:30pm on Channel 4, with first-look episodes airing on E4 at 7pm, or stream first daily on All4.
