Brighton midfielder forced to retire at 24 over health condition

Enock Mwepu, 24 has been forced to retire from football due to a hereditary heart condition.

The 24-year-old Premier League player had recently fallen ill on international football duty when he joined Zambia national squad in Mali. He was unable to train with the team and spent four days in hospital.

He had tests done when he returned to England and the results only left him the option of retirement.

Brighton football club said Mwepu would be at an “extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event” if he continued playing football.

Mwepu said he was retiring with “sadness” adding he had lived his dream by playing in the Premier League.

“This is, however, not the end of my involvement in football, I plan to stay involved in some capacity,” he said in a statement on Twitter.

Mwepu had joined Brighton on a four-year deal for a reported fee of £18 million in July 2021.
