Golden Globes returning to TV in 2023 after boycott

The Golden Globes is set for a 2023 TV return after being dropped by NBC last year amid allegations of racism, sexism and a lack of diversity among its voters.

This year’s Golden Globes was held privately, for the first time since the 2008 ceremony which was also not televised.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) – which hands out the awards based on votes from its members, faced a boycott last year after a LA Times report revealed the group had not had a single black member for 20 years.

There were further allegations of racism, sexism and conflicts of interest, including that voters frequently accepted “freebies” from the studios whose movies they were considering.

The report prompted actors and publicists to boycott the Globes, resulting in this year’s telecast being cancelled.

Since the release of the report and the boycott, HFPA leaders have set out a series of public reforms – including a ban on members receiving gifts from movie studios attempting to secure their votes.

Twenty-one new members – six of whom are black, joined last year. They have also taken on 100 new voters – including some, for the first time, being based outside the US.

The return to NBC for the 2023 show is only a one-year deal, but will mark the 80th anniversary of the trophy gala.
