The Guardian has opted for a photograph of the Queen holding the royal orb and sceptre. 

Inside, columnist Jonathan Freedland writes that her death marks not only the end of the second Elizabethan age, but the start of “a new future”.

“There will be a different head on the coin, different words for the national anthem,” he says.

“The one element in our collective life that was consistently, reliably the same… has gone.”
