As Thatcher learned, no Tory leader survives a confidence vote
The Telegraph says there may not be a clear alternative leader within the party now, but that doesn’t mean one will never emerge.
If there is one thing that our recent political history shows, it is that once the position of a prime minister is put to the test by an actual vote, it marks the beginning of the end, almost irrespective of the result itself. When a little known backbencher, Sir Anthony Meyer, had the temerity (so it then seemed) to challenge Margaret Thatcher in her 11th year as prime minister and her 16th year as leader of the party, no one, including I suspect Sir Anthony himself, thought that he would get anything other than derisory vote.
