Platinum Jubilee weather forecast – ‘sunglasses over umbrellas’

Platinum Jubilee weather forecast – ‘sunglasses over umbrellas’

The latest update on the Platinum Jubilee weather forecast from the Met Office is promising threats of showers.

The Platinum Jubilee celebrations – marking the Queen’s remarkable 70-year reign- kicks off on Thursday and last until Sunday.

The four-day bank holiday weekend will start off bright and sunny but the warmer conditions will start to cool and become more unsettled.

Thursday – the day the Queen and senior members of the royal family are expected to make an appearance on Buckingham Palace balcony – will be dry and mostly sunny for southern areas. The day will mark the start of the celebrations and will include Trooping the Colour. But in northern areas, they’ll be spells of showery rain.

And Friday will look very similar to Thursday with some areas enjoying “plenty of sunshine” though rain could fall in central and northern England, according to the Met Office. On Friday, there will be a service of thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Blue skies and dry weather is predicted on Saturday with temperatures hitting 20C – the news will be warmly welcomed by anyone attending Epsom Derby race and later the BBC’s Platinum Party at the palace open-air concert.

On Sunday, thousands of people will gather across the country as more than 85,000 Big Jubilee Lunches and street parties are staged. But those taking part in the Pageant parade through central London on Sunday could see more unsettled weather – with the day predicted to be cloudier, chillier with a risk of showers.

The Met Office said the weekend is looking “quite settled, with most places seeing quite a bit of fine and dry weather again, with a risk of showers in the South East and east coast”.

They’ll be continued updates as the weekend draws closer as forecasters continue to monitor the path of a plume of warm air from over the continent.

It could bring heavy showers that may, however, be supplanted by drier weather and “rather warm” temperatures as a high-pressure system moves in.

Met Office meteorologist Richard Miles said: “Most people should see a bit of sunshine”.

But revellers going to outdoor celebrations would be wise to be ready for all eventualities.

“You’d be unlucky if you had to use the umbrella, but take one just in case, because you can never know,” he said.

“You’re more likely to need the sunglasses than the umbrella.”
