United Arab Emirates Gas cylinder blast in Abu Dhabi kills 2 and injures 120.

Abu Dhabi authorities are restricting information about the blast, and have prevented news outlets from reporting blasts and explosions. Especially since the rise of the Houthi drone attacks in the region.

A gas cylinder explosion in the capital of the United Arab Emirates killed two people and injured 120 others Monday, police said, hours after authorities downplayed the incident and warned the public not to share images of the aftermath.

The explosion struck a restaurant just after 1 p.m. in Abu Dhabi’s Khalidiya neighbourhood, just a few blocks from the capital’s beachfront corniche. Initially, Abu Dhabi police vaguely referred to damage and injuries, showing pictures of glass and debris littering the street.

Six hours later in a tweet, Abu Dhabi police offered the casualties — 64 people with “minor injuries,” 56 with “moderate injuries” and two people killed.

“The injured were transferred to the hospital to receive necessary health care, with material damage to shops and facades of six buildings,” the police said. They described an investigation into the blast as ongoing.

    Al Khalidiya area

Emergency response teams in the capital had brought under control a fire that erupted after a gas cylinder exploded at the restaurant.

The restaurant is located in Al Khalidiya area, and response personnel rushed to the scene to control the situation, the Abu Dhabi Police announced on its social media platforms.

The outlet, which serves South Asian fare, is located in a five-storey building behind Khalidiyah Mall.

Preliminary information suggests that some people were injured and some shops damaged. The building has been evacuated.

Four residential buildings in the area were evacuated since the fire was reported, and residents are being provided temporary accommodation as authorities work to ensure that the structures are safe for habitation.
