Parents charged with causing morbidly obese teenage daughter’s death

Parents charged with causing morbidly obese teenage daughter’s death
Tributes to 16-year-old Kaylea Titford who was found dead at her home in October 2020 – her parents have been charged with causing her death.

Kaylea Titford was 16 when she was found dead at her home in Newtown, Powys in Mid Wales in October 2020. Today her parents have appeared in court charged with her death.

Their failure at allowing their teenage daughter to become morbidly obese and failing to get her medical help have led to charges of gross negligence, manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child or vulnerable person.

It is alleged between 24 March and 11 October 2020, dad Alun Titford, 44, and mum, Sarah Lloyd-Jones,39, failed to ensure their daughter’s deity needs were met, leading to morbid obesity.

The charge states they failed to ensure she got enough exercise, was in a hygienic condition, lived in a safe and hygienic environment, that her physical health was maintained, or that reasonable medical help was sought.

The parents stood side by side in the docks today before Welshpool magistrates court – they spoke only to confirm their names, ages and addresses and did not enter any pleas.

Prosecutor Helen Tench asked both defendants to remain on conditional bail and not to have any contact with anyone under the age of 18.

An earlier inquest hearing was told Kaylea had spina bifida and had “multiple medical issues” throughout her life.

The girl’s parents will appear before Mold crown court in north Wales on 14 April 2022.
