    Brazil tops 1 million Covid-19 cases. It may pass the US next, becoming the worst-hit country on the planet 

    CNN says Brazil has now reported more than 1 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and 48,954 deaths marking a grim milestone for the South American country. 

    The health ministry on Friday reported 54,771 new cases, a record daily spike that brought the nationwide total to 1,032,913.

    PM to announce on Tuesday if pubs can reopen

    BBC News says Boris Johnson is expected to announce on Tuesday if pubs and other hospitality services can reopen on 4 July. It will mean a relaxing of the 2-metre social distancing rule in England. 

    Non-essential shops have already reopened in England, and retail is resuming in Wales from today. 

    Matt Hancock earlier said England is “clearly on track” to further ease lockdown restrictions.

    WHO reports record daily global case increase as known infections pass 8.9m

    The Guardian says the World Health Organisation has reported a record increase in global cases on Sunday. The total of cases rising by 184,020 in a 24-hour period.

    The biggest increase was from North and South America with over 116,000 new cases. Total global cases are over 8.7 million with more than 461,000 deaths, according to the WHO.

    PM Phillippe says France could impose new lockdown on French Guiana after Covid-19 spread

    France24 says the coronavirus has been spreading faster in the last 10 days in French Guiana and the French government is not ruling out imposing a new lockdown on the overseas territory, Prime Minister Edouard Phillippe’s office has said. 

    The Prime Minister’s office also said it will be stepping up its resources to tackle the spread in the region.

    Saudi Arabia is back in business as coronavirus curfews end

    Arab News says the Kingdom’s streets came back to life on Sunday after a months-long lockdown ended, with people breathing a sigh of relief and resuming everyday activities.

    Saudi Arabia’s three-phase unlock strategy started on May 28 after months of lockdown. Preventive measures such as social distancing have been put into place as restaurants and cafes resume indoor trade and gyms and beauty salons are welcoming back clients.

    Iraqi football legend Ahmad Radhi dies after battling Covid-19 

    Aljazeera says Iraqi football legend Ahmed Radhi has died as a result of complications after he was diagnosed with Covid-19, the Iraqi health ministry said. 

    Radhi, 56, had been hospitalised last week in Baghdad after testing positive for the virus but had checked out on Thursday after his condition improved.
