Spike in cases “a tragedy,” Florida infectious disease expert says
CNN says Florida is set to become a new centre of coronavirus spread and that’s a tragedy, an infectious disease specialist from Florida International University said Thursday.
“We have just spent so much time and effort and suffering hammering down the original outbreak that it’s really a tragedy to see the numbers start to go back up,” Dr Aileen Marty.

Retail sales in May partly recover after DIY boost
BBC News says UK retail sales partly recovered in May, despite the continuation of coronavirus-related lockdown measures.
The number of goods sold last month increased by 12%, in comparison with record falls seen in April, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Sales were boosted by a 42% rise at household goods stores, with DIY shops and garden centres reopening.

13-day-old healthy baby becomes UK’s youngest victim
The Guardian says a 13-day old baby, understood to have no underlying health conditions, has died from Covid-19, NHS England has reported.
The newborn is thought to be one of the youngest victims of the disease in the UK.
On Thursday it was reported that 135 more people had lost their lives in the UK. Of those, 62 patients had died in hospitals in England, with the eldest aged 96.

Further Covid-19 lockdowns not needed in the US, says top expert Fauci
France24 says Anthony Fauci has told AFP the US does not require more widespread lockdowns to get its Covid-19 outbreak under control, despite the national daily infection rate has shown no signs of declining.
“I don’t think we’re going to be talking about going back to lockdown,” he said when asked whether places like California and Texas that are seeing a surge in their caseload should reissue stay-at-home orders.
“I think we’re going to be talking about trying to better control those areas of the country that seem to be having a surge of cases”

Coronavirus medical aid arrives in Yemen
Aljazeera says about 43 tons of coronavirus medical aid arrived in Yemen on Thursday, state news agency Saba New reported.
The shipment includes PCR tests, ventilators and protection equipment, Saba added.
The country’s health sector has been battered by years of war against Iran-backed Houthi militants and officials have been constantly highlighting the war-torn area’s shortage of proper equipment.
