New Covid drug that works against Omicron and cuts risk of death by 79% is approved in UK
The Metro says A new Covid-19 treatment has been approved by UK regulators, in what could be a major boost for the NHS ahead of a difficult winter.
Drug makers GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) believe the drug should be effective against the new Omicron variant.
The monoclonal antibody Xevudy (sotrovimab) will be given to people in the UK at high risk of developing severe disease, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said.
The treatment has been found to cut hospitalisation and death by nearly 80% and will be given to patients with mild to moderate Covid-19 who are at high risk of going on to develop severe disease.
