MPs need pay rise as living on £81k can be ‘really grim’, says Tory MP
The Daily Mirror says a Tory MP has said MPs need a pay rise because it can be “really grim” living on an annual salary of more than £80,000
Sir Peter Bottomley, who as the oldest MP in the Commons is ‘Father of the House’, made the eyebrow-raising comments in an interview with the New Statesman.
He claimed that parliamentarians, who are paid some £81,932 should earn as much as GPs, whose average salary in England is £100,700 – meaning a pay rise of 22%.
Sir Peter said being an MP was “desperately difficult” for some MPs.
