Students offered £10,000 to switch medical schools
The Times says students of medicine will be offered £10,000 to move medical schools after more university applicants than expected met the terms of their offers.
The number of places on medical courses is capped by the government to ensure a high quality of teaching, training and placements. It has said that the cap will be raised but it is not clear by how much.
However, so many students attained the grades they needed that many medical schools are oversubscribed. This has led the Medical Schools Council (MSC) and the Department for Education (DfE) to introduce a “brokerage programme” to transfer them between schools. Students who need to move medical schools will receive a payment of £10,000 “for the inconvenience”.
