Migrant Channel crossings hit new peak amid modern slavery fears
The Times says almost 1,000 migrants have crossed the Channel in the last two days as new figures suggested this year’s surge in numbers has driven a rise in claims of modern slavery.
The Home Office said 482 migrants reached the UK in 21 boats on Wednesday — a new daily record. Yesterday a further 475 reached the UK in 15 boats, taking the total over the two days to 957.
In contrast, the French manage to intercept just 384 of the migrant crossings — less than a third of all attempts in the last two days. A total of 1,341 people attempted the 21-mile journey over the last two days.
