Krystsina Tsimanouskaya: Belarus sprinter arrives in Poland to seek protection after Olympics incident
The i says Belarusian Olympic sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya has arrived in Warsaw, where she intends to stay under the diplomatic protection of Poland, after an attempt to force her to return to her home country.
The treatment of the sprinter by Belarus has sparked international alarm, after officials allegedly attempted to force her to fly home from the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday.
Tsimanouskaya, who has faced fury from Alexander Lukashenko’s regime with mild public criticism of the nation’s athletics coaches, was taken into police protection at the airport in Tokyo at the weekend before opting to seek refuge from the Polish embassy.
