Emily Campbell: Team GB weightlifter hopes her historic medal can ‘inspire people to follow their dreams’
The i says on a night featuring two Olympic records and the first ever transgender lifter, Emily Campbell wrote her own piece of history by becoming the first British female weightlifting medallist.
Campbell made two lifts under extreme pressure – the first was to guarantee a bronze, the second was to upgrade it – to land the silver medal.
It was the first Olympic medal for Team GB in either sex since David Mercer won bronze in the middle-heavyweight division at Los Angeles 1984.
