Her Heart for a Compass by Sarah Ferguson review — a rather sexless affair
The Times says it is not much of a mystery where Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, gets her ideas. The heroine of Her Heart for a Compass, her debut novel for adults, is Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott — Ferguson’s great-great-aunt — but the known details of her life are scant. She was born in 1846, was bridesmaid to Queen Victoria’s daughter Princess Helena in 1866, and was married in 1875, at the relatively advanced age of 29.
In the wide gaps between those fixed points, Ferguson (with the help of her co-writer Marguerite Kaye) tells a story that sounds strangely familiar. Margaret is a “titian-haired” aristocrat whose figure is scrutinised, attracts the attention of the press and writes children’s fiction on the side.
