Ignore the Mills & Boon snobs – love stories are vital whether they’re by Sarah Ferguson or Sally Rooney
The i says in June, when Jeanette Winterson burned a pile of her books in protest at the “cosy little domestic blurbs” on their new covers, she did so enraged after a friend had told her they sounded “like Mills & Boon”.
People are still tiresomely snotty about these books despite the fact that one is sold every 10 seconds in the UK, and millions more are flogged worldwide from a roster of 2,000 authors. During the Second World War when paper was rationed, the publisher persuaded the Ministry of War that Mills & Boons should continue to be published in order to boost the morale of “the women in the factories”.
