Iranian ambassador rebuked over Mercer Street drone attack
The Times says the Iranian ambassador to London was summoned to the Foreign Office yesterday in protest against an “outrageous” drone attack on an Israeli-managed oil tanker that killed a British guard.
Mohsen Baharvand was called in as Britain and the US joined Israel in blaming Iran for the attack in the Arabian Sea, off Oman, and began discussions over a “concerted response”.
Boris Johnson described the attack as outrageous and said that Iran must face the consequences. “This was clearly an unacceptable attack on commercial shipping,” the prime minister said. “A UK national died. It is absolutely vital that Iran and every other country respects the freedoms of navigation.”
