Five people were killed in an ambush on mourners during a Hezbollah militant’s funeral in a town south of Beirut on Sunday afternoon, a security source told AFP.
Heavy gunfire erupted in Khaldeh during the funeral of militant Ali Shibli, who was slain by an Arab tribesman on Saturday night during a wedding.
The shooting on Saturday night, according to Lebanese media, was an act of revenge.
The Arab tribes of Khaldeh issued a statement on Saturday explaining the incident and confirming that it was a “revenge case.”
“Therefore, we wish the family of the murdered Ali Shibli to consider the killing an eye for an eye, and not to exceed that, and that we are all keen to preserve civil peace, the right of neighborhood and national participation,” the statement added.
According to local media, the Lebanese army has increased its presence in the south of Beirut in order to maintain control of the situation and prevent conflicts.
