Lorry driver shortage hits BP petrol supplies but motorists assured plenty of fuel available
The i says Petrol retailers have reassured motorists there is no need to panic about fuel availability after BP was forced to close several sites due to shortages.
BP has confirmed the temporary closure of a “handful” of petrol stations after the nationwide shortage of HGV drivers disrupted supply chains, leaving the sites with neither unleaded nor diesel fuel.
There is currently an estimated shortfall of 100,000 lorry drivers, caused by factors including Brexit – which led thousands of EU workers to leave the country – changes in drivers’ tax status and a large backlog of driving tests that has built up over the course of the pandemic.
